Internet, World Wide Web, Wifi and Bluetooth

Internet and World Wide Web

For something we use daily, only a few people know about all the complicated systems that go into our everyday use of cellphones, computers, etc. The first is the Internet; what is it? The Internet is a global network for all electronic devices. Computer scientists Vinton Cerf and Bob Kahn created the first protocols that today we call the Internet. The official birthday of the Internet falls on January 1, 1983. At first, government researchers used the Internet to provide information and resources. Now, the Internet is used to find information quickly, reach people all around the globe, and so much more.

The World Wide Web (WWW) is a system of interconnected public websites that can be reached through the Internet. A British scientist, Tim Berners-Lee, created the World Wide Web in 1989. Initially, the WWW was used for scientists to communicate between universities and institutes globally with an automated system. This differs from today; today, we use the World Wide Web to connect the world online, making it easier for people to communicate, share information, etc.

The World Wide Web and the Internet are not the same thing, but they are related. The WWW is a set of software services that run off the Internet to connect people globally. The Internet is a global interconnected network with many computing devices. The WWW runs off the Internet; therefore, they work together because the WWW depends on the Internet.

The first ever website was created on August 6, 1991, this started the creation of the approximately 1.9 billion websites we have today. The same scientist who created the WWW also created the first website; his name is Tim Berners-Lee. The first website created included information on the World Wide Web. The URL to the first website is straightforward and contains little information; it can be viewed at info.cern.ch.

WiFi, Bluetooth, and Lamarr

While Hedy Lamarr did not directly invent WiFi or Bluetooth, she did invent the patent for frequency hopping, which is used for WiFi and Bluetooth today. She was a famous Hollywood actress who appeared in many films in the 1940s. There is a long about Hedy Lamarr by John Beck and Johnny Depp called This Is A Song For Miss Hedy Lamarr. This song was written about her because outside of the screen, she was a genius who was only seen for her beauty and, therefore, was not taken seriously. Rather than being seen for her worth, people only saw her for her attractiveness.

Bluetooth dates back to 1994, and the person behind it was Dr. Jaap Haartsen, who found short-range radio connections that later led to Bluetooth. He filed for the patent in 1997, which officially went through in 2003. In 1996, three industry leaders met to plan this new concept of short-range radio technology. During this meeting, Jim Kardach suggested calling this technology Bluetooth a temporary code name; it was only intended to be temporary until the marketing team could develop something else. The logo stems from King Harald "Bluetooth" Gormsson, who was known for uniting Denmark and Norway in 958. His dead, gray/dark blue tooth earned him his nickname. The Bluetooth logo merges Harald's initials, ᚼ and ᛒ.

Many people contributed to the invention of WiFi, including Hedy Lamarr; the person who contributed most and is known as "the father of WiFi" is Vic Hayes. The first prototype for WiFi was in 1997, and, as time has gone on, it has improved juristically. The original name for WiFi was WaveLAN, which was intended to be used for cashier systems. WiFi got its name from a company, WECA, a marketing firm hired; they chose WiFi because it was similar to hi-fi (high fidelity) and sounded pleasing. This was in 1999, and later in 2004, WiFi products such as cellphones hit the market.
